Top Christmas Markets and Attractions in Budapest

Christmas Fair Vorosmarty Square: The Christmas market at Vorosmarty Square is the city’s best known, internationally recognised winter market. With over 100 stalls to explore, there’s no shortage of beautiful handmade gifts, decorations, and crafts to check out. The market is centrally located outside the Gerbeaud Coffee House. The market also includes various live performances, a playhouse for children, and the chance to meet Santa Claus. As Budapest Christmas Markets go, this one is the top tier!

Christmas Market by Basilica: Set in the spacious square outside St. Stephen’s Basilica in the city centre, this Christmas market is definitely worth visiting while in Budapest. The elegant edifice of the basilica makes for a stunning backdrop for the Christmas market. In addition to all the fine traditional goods and treats you can purchase at the market, there is an open air ice skating rink that is free for children. Every evening, there is also a spectacular light show projected onto the facade of the basilica.

Erzsébet Square Christmas Market: Though it is one of the smaller Christmas markets in Budapest, the market in Erzsébet Square is charming and offers a nice escape from the larger crowds at the more popular markets. Here you’ll find quaint wooden huts lining the street, offering everything from fur hats to pancakes and donuts. This market is a great place to buy kürtőskalács, or chimney cake, a traditional Hungarian cake baked on a spit.

Christmas Market on Fashion Street: Fashion Street cuts through Vorosmarty Square, so you can easily visit this smaller Christmas market while exploring the city’s most famous one. On Fashion Street, you can enjoy the stunning Christmas tree on display outside the Hotel Kempinski Corvinus. This market offers a wide variety of foods, like strudel, oven-baked flatbread with delicious toppings, chimney cake, and more.
