Porto Colom hotels, flights and car hire in Porto Colom Mallorca
Porto Colom Holidays - Situated on the south east of the island, Porto Colom lies about 70 km from the capital city, Palma. This is a beautifully picturesque area which started life as a little known hamlet with a local community geared towards fishing and basic agriculture - a Majorca holiday to be savoured for rest and de-stressing
Cocooned in a sheltered bay, this natural harbour is home to small colourful boats which head out for the day's catch or anchor lazily in the afternoon sunshine. The area is now a laid back, casual tourist haven with a scattering of delicious local restaurants, many specialising in fresh fish and seafood dishes. The immediate area is not exactly a hotspot for wild nightlife, rather Porto Colom is recommended for relaxation, friendly ambience and informal, pleasurable activities - holidays in Majorca can surely hit the high notes!
Nearby Cala Marsal is a pretty beach area with fine silken sands and is ideal for shallow and safe bathing. Cala Marsal even has Blue Flag status for the cleanliness and purity of its waters. Far from the madding crowds, in Porto Colom there is little danger of wild and wacky party nights; rather, the resort exudes an attractive, low key vibe where couples stroll around, followed by well scrubbed children, all glowing from the day's sunshine.
Pale as mini Marietta biscuits, happy infants in pushchairs can look forward to late nights "on the town" in a completely child friendly resort where 3 and 4 generations together is the norm when socialising. As one would expect, the pace of life is enjoyed at a slow crawl. That is not to say Porto Colom is half dead. Far from it! The resort has some lovely local haunts, a selection of pubs and traditional restaurants by the harbour. Try some dorada en sal (sea bream baked in salt) and delicious pimientos de padron. Yum! However, if you fancy a change of pace, visit the chic resort of Cala D'Or or head north to the well known town of Alcudia.
Porto Colom is actually one of those places (and there are several of them!) which claims the fame of being the birthplace of Christopher Columbus - hence its name. Albeit the story has been translated into folklore, it is unlikely to be true. Shame really as it adds to the attraction of this lovely Majorca resort!
