Fuengirola Holidays
An imposing backdrop of sheltering mountains guards the town of Fuengirola. Now a thriving tourist centre in Costa del Sol, it originated from a teeny fishing village and has emerged as a top Andalucian resort. A wonderful 6 km gentle curve of golden sand beach is rimmed by a wide, palm-lined promenade where evening ramblas are undertaken.
By day, the beach heaves with sun worshippers, watersports enthusiasts and happy, garrulous children frolicing at the water's edge. The Mediterranean laps the shoreline and creates a safe haven for family bathing. Fuengirola has an attractive harbour where colourful boats and expensive yachts vie for position. A weekly flea market provides an extra splash of colour at the Feria ground or days of watery fun are available at the local Aquapark.
Costa del Sol's racecourse, Hipodromo, is located here, so race along to place a bet. The town has numerous lively bars and several Irish pubs and there is a fabulous array of eating options. There are upmarket restaurants, fast food outlets, burger joints, pizza palaces and curry houses and, thankfully, there are lovely local haunts where delicious tapas or Andalucian specialities are served. The area called "Fish Alley" has good eateries and nightlife in the marina is lively with plenty of clubs and bars - very typical of holidays in Costa del Sol.
As Andalucia is home to flamenco, search out some cabaret acts where folklore shows may whisk you off on a swirl of scarlet polka dot skirts, clicking castanets and thrumming guitars.
The old gypsy traditions are pretty evident too and traces of Moorish architecture, as in the medieval fortress, are still intact. By day, many of the local fishermen offer boat trips, a fantastic way to top up the tan and lounge on deck for excitement on the high seas.
Wander the tiny cobbled streets of Los Boliches and you're aware of Fuengirola as a bustling town with local life and tourist concerns peaceably mingling in a happy and informal union. This is a lovely resort for families and couples who enjoy casual entertainment and a sense of the exotic where Africa beckons across a narrow expanse of sea and where sun, sand and style are of optimum importance.
Fuengirola Costa del Sol is a marvellous holiday choice as the infrastructure is superb and Fuengirola hotels offer quality and good standards.
